| Product Name | Tetanus Toxin, aa1300-1314, Clostridium tetani |
| Description | Purity ≥ 80% (HPLC). Tetanus Toxin is polypeptide composed of two chains [A chain (55kD) and B chain (105kD)]. The toxin is carried to CNS via bloodstream. Tetanus Toxin binds at neuromuscular synapses via ganglioside receptors (sialic acid) via B-chain. The toxin is then internalized via receptor-mediated endocytosis. The A chain is thought to be the toxic subunit by analogy to diptheria and cholera toxin. It has no known effect on any cellular enzyme systems. The action of the holotoxin (A + B chains) is to interfer with synaptic transmission by preferentially inhibiting the release of inhibitory neurotransmitters such as glycine and GABA from inhibitory neurons This inhibition causes rigid muscle contraction-spastic paralysis. Tetanus toxin is an exotoxin. These toxons are secreted by a bacterial cell into surrounding fluids. Exotoxins are produced by both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Most exotoxins are readily destroyed by heat. They can be converted into toxoids that |
